The Hindu believe that if a deceased's ashes are laid in the Ganges at Varanasi, their soul will be transported to heaven and escape the cycle of rebirth.

In both 2011 and 2016 Thomas traveled to the Ganges to honor both his and Victoria’s wishes that their ashes be laid to rest in the sacred waters. When it is again possible for the family to travel, Thomas’ ashes will join Victoria’s.
